40,000 years ago, the glory of Cobra-La dominated the planet. An ice age destroyed almost the entire culture and forced its survivors to retreat to a valley hidden deep in the Himalayas. There Golobulus waited for the day that he and his followers could reclaim the planet from the human race.

Generations passed. Then, a brilliant young nobleman came to Golobulus' attention. Although he had been disfigured in a laboratory accident, he was the leader's choice to go out into the world to raise a mighty army. Once this was accomplished, Cobra-La would reclaim from humanity what had originally been theirs. Cobra Commander raised an army, but mighty it was not. In battle after battle, G.I. Joe stopped Cobra in its tracks.

When he returned to Cobra-La after a failed attempt to steal the B.E.T. from G.I. Joe, Cobra Commander was put on trial by Golobulus and sentenced to death for the one unforgiveable crime - failure. He tried to blame his many defeats on his underlings, saying that they lacked courage, but his sentence had already been determined. However, Serpentor suggested that mutating spores be used to turn Cobra Commander into a snake, and this was followed instead of the death sentence.
