Mercer was the only Cobra Viper that defected to the Joes and survived. He had joined Cobra for the adventure and a promise of material gain but soon grew disaffected with the Cobra philosophy. He escaped Cobra Island by hot-wiring a Hydrofoil and outrunning his pursuers across the Gulf of Mexico. With his skills, a tough fighter and invaluable expertise on Cobra tactics and battle doctrine, he was quickly transferred into the G.I.Joe-team by the pentagon.

The Joes weren't too thrilled with having a defector in the ranks, especially one from Cobra, but they soon developed a grudging respect for his no-nonsense attitude and coolness under fire. That still doesn't mean that they can grow to like him very much, but then again, Mercer doesn't like them very much either. He gets by as long as he can be in the middle of the heat where he feels most alive. Mercer is proficient with all Cobra small arms and explosive devices - he is also strong enough to carry heavier artillery that takes at least three men to lift.

Personal comments:

Of the three Sgt. Slaughter's Renegades/Marauders, Mercer was the only one I took a liking to since he had the most interesting background. None of his two figures were to my liking though; I always thought he needed to look bulkier and meaner. And that's what I have with this. And since I don't care much for the Renegades/Marauders, I skipped over it all.
