It won't take long to realize that one of my major devices for naming things in my sci-fi verse is Google Translate. I come up with the theme or name that I want to convey, and then translate it into various other languages until I get a name that sounds just right. Often that ends up being Latin or Italian.

As you may pieced together, the starting point with this name was Moonstone. And I love the name that I was able to pull from that.

Pietra de Luna's name in-story is fitting as she was born and raised on a colony on Earth's Moon. While magic does not hold a definitive place in my sci-fi world. this will be an example that runs close to it, in that Pietra comes from a tribe of (for lack of a better word) Gypsies, who have learned forms of telepathy and limited telekinesis. The full extent of their powers are not known beyond the tribe itself, nor are the sources of such powers.

This gives Pietra and her people considerable clout when dealing with others on an interstellar basis - their powers and services are in great demand, even while others fear those very powers, and look down upon the lifestyle they have chosen.

Pietra - in this verse - will eventually be called upon by Percy Ajax to join his crew in the search of The Pirate de Braun. There she will develop a fascinating relationship with Captain Addai as well.

In my EXCAL verse, when I was still developing original characters for it, Pietra would have had the code name Moonstone. She was to be a protege of Merlin and the other mystics, and would have originated as an outcast from the Florida swamp lands, where she would have spent her youth working for a man named Zartan. Zartan would have at some point certainly muttered: "She'd make a great Dreadnok."
