Orangata was once a rebel fighting against a rival army that had taken control of his tribal land in Uganda. He was taken captive after a failed raid, but was spared execution due to his fierce temperament and massive physique. He was sold off to a Turkish crime lord that found use of him in brutal underground gladiator matches, where subjects fight to the death. He proved to be a spectacular combatant, quickly dominating the underground circuit.

It was in one of these fights that Zartan happen to be attending that Orangata chanced an escape but not without a struggle. Zartan ever the opportunist helped the gladiator achieve his freedom. Without a purpose and indebted to Zhim, the Ugandan giant offered Zartan his service and loyalty.
