S.O.L.D.I.E.R. is: Special Operative: Land Defense, Interdiction, Exfiltration, and Reconnaissance (with thanks to Ben Morrison for the acronym). He's based on an unproduced G.I. Joe concept proposed by Kirk Bozigian and designed by Kurt Groen. One of an entire group of superhero/villain inspired Joes and Cobras called the X Soldiers developed to try to tap into the success of Kenner and Toy Biz's superhero toys in the 90s. Only one mockup was made to my knowledge, a version of this character using a Batman figure as the base, with the rest only existing as art. I can't see the concept catching on had they decided to pull the trigger on it, but it's an interesting piece of Joe's history and has some pretty cool designs. Obscure Joe and interesting design are all I really need to hear to get me interested, so these guys have definitely been on my list and SOLDIER is the first I've made. They may seem a bit farfetched, but in a world with Bulletman, BATS, and Zartan, I don't think they're our of the question either.
