Torch is an illiterate and unrepentant thug with a tendency for explosive periods of extreme violence. Torch was sent to Borstal, a reform school, at the age of fourteen. Torch escaped Borstal and traveled to Great Britain. He seemed to be on the proper path when he went into the British Merchant Navy. It was while he was in the British Merchant Navy that he learned how to use an acetylene cutting torch. Torch soon became bored and began to develop an obsession with fire. Torch eventually left the British Merchant Navy and began to work in a "chop-shop".

His obsession with fire continued to grow and he began to build his own custom flamethrower. He soon found his way into the criminal underworld and started finding opportunities burning down structures for money. Torch acquired his fireman's axe on one occasion when he was hired to send a message to the local fire department about their investigations of suspected arson.
