John Shepherd's dearest wish from boyhood was to join the Royal Marine Commandos; after seeing a parade of the Royal marines band. From that point on, he dedicated himself to training for all aspects of army life, paying for skiing and scuba lessons. He wanted to be the best. Unfortunately, his abilities matched his ambitions and the better he became, the more arrogant his attitude.

Shepherd joined the marines on leaving school and quickly excelled, passing out first in his class at Sandhurst.

His arrogance became worse as the years progressed, and he became more and more ruthless in his quest to become the best.

He was one of the first recruits to Z Force, the infantry arm of Action Force. On one of the first missions against a new terrorist group called The Red Shadows, he was captured by Baron Ironblood and brainwashed, becoming the Baron's right hand man, and a completely ruthless and merciless terrorist.
