Clyde "Gnaw" Hyde was an illegal hunter in Canada when he was charged for killing a mounted police. I had two options: prison or Slaughter House. If he knew what the "Slaughter House" was, he would have chosen prison. Clyde was not the best recruit, nor the most intelligent, nor the cleanest, but he was an accurate shooter. Sgt. Slaughter tried to make him a real Joe. He already achieved with other social "waste". However, Gnaw was the worst... He fought constantly with his peers and sent more than one to the hospital.

When Gnaw discovered that the Sergeant was going to expel him from his Marauders, he fled to Africa where he continued with illegal hunting and cultivating his hatred towards the Joes and, especially, Sgt. Slaughter.
