Scrap Iron was the key to Destro's plan to overthrow Cobra Commander III and free his MARS team from his grasp. Scrap Iron was a former weapons demonstrator for MARS until he took a contract with Cobra and became their weapons specialist. When Cobra Commander III took over, he was told that his services were no longer needed but he was not allowed to leave Cobra Island either. He staged his own suicide and was reborn as Mech, an Iron Grenadier super soldier who was a perfect fit for the new Python Patrol team being backed by MARS and Destro. With his personal grudge against Cobra Commander III, Mech was given a role alongside Snake Eater to lead the new team. His veteran experience and take-no-prisoners attitude has led the team in and out of every battle with no loss of personnel.
