Demonstrating aptitude with advanced electronics, Lightner turned down a scholarship to MIT to serve in the U.S. Military. Joining the Army and specializing in advanced weaponry and tactics Lightner saw combat in Afghanistan with covert forces fighting against the U.S.S.R. during the Russian Afghanistan conflict.
Displaying cruel and remorseless tendencies, Lightner was disciplined several times through Non-Judicial Punishment, though no formal charges were brought against him.
During his time with the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) he met young Patrick Faulkner who was recruiting for a special anti-terrorist operations team. Lightner jumped at the opportunity and is now a core member of the Faulkner Group.
