Firebug went through college majoring in chemical and mechanical engineering. Despite having excellent grades and being quite intelligent, he was unemployable due to a few personality traits, and a completely tatooed arm. After burning down a few of the firms that refused to hire him, Firebug ran into the Dreadnoks. Since he can improve or repair almost all of their equipment, he was welcomed right in. Even Dr. Mindbender has heard of his talents, and is rumored to have a lab ready and waiting with refrigerator stocked with grape soda in the event that Firebug would want an opportunity to develop some really explosive technology.
