Joseph P. Colton was the original soldier from which GI Joe took its name. He was the soldier of the 50's and 60's and took his job seriously. He asked for one thing in return and that was respect.

in 1974, he retired from the Army totally and joined the Adventure Team, in which he became an explorer and helped everyone he came across. Flagg called him to the White House in '84 and asked him to help establish the GI Joe team and he agreed. He even gave it a better name than Delta Force group D. He named it the GI Joe Team, after himself.
