Once a member of the Russian Spetsnaz, Mikhail Derenko joined the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity against the evil of the Red Shadows. After the defeat of the Red Shadows, Mikhail became disenfranchised with the political backstabbing of the motherland. He would later join a new organization called Cobra. Mikhail sacrificed his identity and in time ascended to the rank of Crimson Guard. He remained loyal to Cobra Commander, until the rise of Serpentor. The New Cobra Emperor showed Derenko did not have to another unnamed cog in the works. After the first Cobra Civil War, Derenko left Cobra, helping Pythona and Dr Mindbender to escape. He helped form the Coil, and was rechristened Overlord by the New Serpentor. After the Second Cobra Civil War, Overload was captured by the U.S. Forces, and thanks to him the Coil was granted amnesty. He helped create General Maximus, and along with Kobra Khan (AKA Serpentor reborn) and Pythona, he continues to serve the God Emperor.
