After the dead began walking the Earth, Conrad "Duke" Hauser was top shirt of the elite G.I.Joe Counter Terrorism team. Tracking the outbreak to a MARS lab, Duke led a select team in hopes of finding something that could help lead to a cure. Almost immediately the op was FUBAR. There was a top level mole feeding information to MARS, so that by the time Duke and his team showed up MARS was expecting them. Unbeknownst to MARS the mole was also providing information to Cobra. As Duke and his team were raiding the MARS lab and meeting fierce resistance the worst happened. Cobra showed up enforce and massacred IG and Joe alike. Duke was the last man standing. Having secured the information he was sent to retrieve Cobra Commander stepped out of the smoke and walked up to Duke. At his side was the mole, who Duke immediately recognized, a Siege and Duke's father. Mr. Hauser was the hostage of the Seige whose hand and pistol was duck tapped to the fathers head. The mole tried ordering Duke to hand over the information. Beaten but not yet broken Duke held his ground, refusing to give the traitor the packet. Cobra Commander gave Duke a choice, the information in exchange for his father. Duke called CCs bluff. Pieces of his father's head smeared across his face as the Seige fired a single shot at the same moment CC shot Duke in the head taking the packet as it fell from Duke's hand. The last thing Duke saw before everything went black was Cobra Commander, the mole, and the President of the United States boarding Marine 1 under the guard of Seiges and Marines.

When he came to Duke was strapped to a table surrounded by the scarred remains of the once powerful Iron Grenadiers. From the shadows came a voice offering a chance for revenge against both Cobra Commander and the United States. Destro stepped forward and Duke went wild with rage. Breaking free of his restraints Duke attacked Destro. In his frenzied rage he did not notice that neither his loyal IGs nor Destro offered any resistance. Destro just kept repeating the same offer just as dozens of video screens clicked to life showing the treachery of CC and the US. Duke was now broken. He released Destro and fell to his knees. All the while Destro continued repeating his offer in a frighteningly even tone. When Duke rose it was with the help of Destro's hand. Looking around the room at Destro's forces something in a display case caught his eye. Walking over it Duke smashed the glass. When he turned back toward Destro, Conrad "Duke" Hauser was no more now all that remained was Darklon.
