A disgraced businessman, Simon Williams went to work for Baron Zemo. Treated to an experimental Ionic ray, Williams gained enormous strength, but at the cost of having to receive regular doses of an antidote provided only by Zemo, in return for destroying the Avengers. In time, Wonder Man rebelled, heroically sacrificing himself to save the heroes. Being now composed of Ionic energy, Wonder Man returned in a completely Ionic state, and is now virtually immortal because his body has the innate ability to always reform itself.
