File Name: Fischer, Robert M., Jr.
Primary Military Specialty: Military Intelligence
Secondary Military Specialty: Tactician

Although much of Fischer's background information is classified, it has been established that he immigrated to the U.S. in the mid-90's from Yugoslavia. While the identities of his parents are also classified, it is assumed that one or both of them was American. Prior to his immigration, Checkmate had received extensive education, possessing three master's degrees (psychology, military science, and political science) and several more bachelor's degrees in a variety of world languages.* Upon being granted citizenship, Checkmate was approached by the State Department and, through classified channels, was placed in a high-level position in the CIA. Despite his aptitude for the job, Checkmate showed great interest in field operations (he had also excelled in the CIA's field training program), and quickly became bored with the bureaucratic nature of his CIA position. Upon learning that the G.I. Joe team lacked its own self-sufficient intelligence unit, he requested a transfer and was approved.

*Checkmate also held the world amateur chess title during his time in Yugoslavia, but had been forbidden to compete professionally by his father.

From General Hawk's Files: "When Checkmate's transfer orders came through, I got a look at his files. The CIA had given him the full battery of intellect testing, and his scores were just plain scary. And that was BEFORE I met him. People talk about being one or two steps ahead of an opponent; Checkmate is one or two LAPS ahead. He's as good a tactician as there is. He's also as stubborn as a mule, especially when it comes to field operations. He'd probably be more useful in a room full or tac readouts and monitors, but he always tells us that he can get a better feel for the battle if he's out in the thick of it. I'd try to argue with him, but I know how far that would get me, and I'd try to pull rank on him, but the conditions of his transfer mean he's effectively out of my control. Don't even ask about the time I joined him for a friendly game of chess..."
