Superboy is also known by his Kryptonian name of Kon-El and his human alias of Conner Kent. He is a human/Kryptonian hybrid, cloned from the genetic material of ther superhero Superman and his arch nemesis Lex Luthor.

Superboy was created as part of Project: Superman, which was the Superman cloning project originally intended to recreate the Man of Steel after his death at the hands of Doomsday. Due to the inability to replicate Kryptonian DNA, the clones of Superman degenerate after a short period of time. After 12 failed attempts at cloning Superman, human DNA was used to help stabilize the Kryptonian DNA. The Newsboy Legion freed Superboy from his cloning chamber prior to him reaching a mature age; hence why he become the Boy of Steel instead of the Man of Steel.
