Bruise was once known as respected String Theory Physicist, Bruce Fraser. Fraser had run across an interesting anomaly in what he called in his notes a "Time Pocket" and when he was told he had to wait to explore it, he took matters into his own hands. He built an armored EXO suit using technology stolen and adapted from the same COBRA scientists that built the earlier WRAITH armor, and dove into this time pocket. Unfortunately, he was ill-prepared and his hubris cost him. It's true he gained prodigious strength and durability, but he lost his mind and now functions at a 1st grade level. People started calling him "Bruise" because that's the only word he can say anymore. We all assume it's because he's trying to remind people who he is, but who knows what he saw inside that "time pocket?"
