In 1939, Edward Blake started out trying to clean up the New York waterfront as a clown-like costumed vigilante calling himself The Comedian. He joined the superhero group Minutemen after the team was formed in '39, but was expelled for trying to rape fellow member Silk Spectre in 1940. He then went on to fight in World War II in the Pacific theater, returning a war hero. In 1949, he met with Silk Spectre and ended up fathering a daughter with her. Sometime after, he became a government agent, fighting in The Vietnam War, rescuing the hostages in Iran, and participating in countless other clandestine missions for the US government for many years. His career came to an end in 1985, when he was found murdered in his New York apartment.

Edward Blake was a cynical, amoral, and sadistic man who believes that ultimately, life is all one big joke.
