Karl Hess served as a member of Austria's elite GEK anti-terrorist squad. His last mission before transferring to Action Force was an assault on a Cobra outpost in Vienna. There, Karl came across one of Serpentor's head pieces in the aftermath. As the GEK are also called the Cobras, Karl took the helmet as a reminder of the team he was leaving and the threat he was fighting. More than one Cobra trooper has hesitated in combat upon seeing Snake Hunter coming towards them.
