Zanzibar found Deadwood sailing the seas and taking ships in the tradition of old world pirates. He never kept the same crew very long with the exception of Shang-Hai, his personal confidante and bodyguard. For years Deadwood would disappear from sight as his reputation fade and then he would reappear to make several successful raids. Zanzibar hunted him down during one of his hiatuses and offered him a permanent position as the Captain of Topknot, Zanzibar personal flagship. Deadwood accepted and offered his hideaway, Tombstone Cove, to Zanzibar as headquarters. When Zanzibar saw the fleet at his disposal he immediately accepted.
