.50 Caliber From Cheap Knock-Off Toy

In 1959 American Motors began working on an upgraded version to the venerable and highly successful Willys M38A1 Jeep. Based on feedback received from military officers and generals, they fitted the M38A2 Jeep with a wider stance to prevent rollovers, slightly higher and thicker steel around the driver and passenger, more comfortable seats, a more powerful motor, and a top speed of 65 MPH. The new Jeep was intended to be a safer, more comfortable, more powerful Jeep for use carrying ranking officers and for use at higher speeds on paved roads.

The M38A2X was fitted with a .50 Caliber machine gun with heavy-duty stabilizing post. This particular model provided superior defensive characteristics as was also effective as a high speed attack vehicle.

While the M38A2 and M38A2X were effective , fewer than 1000 units were purchased and most saw little action as they were reserved for use by high ranking officers at US bases. When the Humvee was approved by the US Government in 1983, all remaining M38A2 & M38A2X units were deactivated and stored. Some of these units were requisitioned for use by a fledgling special forces unit known as GI Joe for missions where their agility and ruggedness were found very useful.
