The Cobra SBT (Supreme Battle Tank) Project began in March 2001 when a lack of "appropriate armored firepower" was noticed by one of Cobra Commander's most trusted regimental commanders, Colonel Bane. Colonel Bane received permission from Cobra Commander himself to develop and test this new project as he saw fit, and to make the entire tank "in house" using Cobra-owned facilities. Colonel Bane sent out the special forces operatives of the 62nd "Golden Cobra" Regiment to "acquire" the most advanced resources available from the nations of the world, and recruited the skills of one of the most experienced of Cobra’s vehicle operators, Tracks, as the lead test-pilot and first operator of the new tank.

From its inception the SBT was designed around three primary objectives: 1. Domination of the battlefield through speed and power 2. Maximum Survivability and 3. Intimidation of enemy forces. The armor of the tank incorporates steel encased depleted uranium with bulkheads separating the crew compartment from the fuel tanks. The top panels of the tank are designed to blow outwards in the event of penetration by a HEAT projectile. The SBT is protected against nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) warfare. The SBT is propelled by Cabro CGT 1680-5 gas turbine engines, and has the Sidewinder X-1300-2B dual -transmission which provides four forward and two reverse gears that may operate independently on the two-track system, allowing maximum maneuverability and turning radius. The new CGT engine is lighter and smaller than past production engines with rapid acceleration, quieter running and no visible exhaust.

The main armament is the 125mm M300 smoothbore gun, developed by Baroc Metal of Germany. The 125mm gun fires training, HEAT, and depleted uranium penetrator rounds and is equipped with a stabilization system allowing accurate firing during movement. The main armament fires at a rate on par with the M1A2 Abrams. The six secondary guns are controlled internally by either the gunner or the tank commander. The crew are provided with 360 degree views through the use of state of the art sensors and viewing apparatus mounted around the tank along with the "Mini-Aegis" Sensor Array mounted on the top-rear. The SBT is operated by a crew of three, but may be operated by only one individual using the ICBS (Integrated Control Battle Suit). The ICBS may be used in any instance, but a crew of three is recommended to prevent sensory overload and to provide a maximum of situational awareness. Though costly, the computers, wiring, and control mechanisms are designed to be triple-redundant, meaning that in the unlikely event any crew station is lost, any other station may be used as a secondary means to control the vehicle and its weapons systems.

As of May 2004, the SBT has completed "Battle Field Testing" where its outstanding performance earned it the name "Black Death" by the enemy tank crews and infantry units it was deployed against. Throughout testing, as well as in battlefield conditions, it has taken direct hits from weapons of various calibers and continued to run with only minimal replacement of parts and armor needed after the fact. The prototype, SBT 01, is scheduled to be assigned to the 62nd Regiment as of 01 June 2004 to undergo further operational testing. The SBT has been christened by Cobra Commander as the "Typhon " Tank (after the last of the Titans) though Cobra Soldiers have already begun calling it the "Super-HISS" due to its resemblance to the HISS IV. There is currently an order for a production run of 38 tanks, with the stipulation made that the triple-redundancy feature be removed in favor of the ICBS-only feature as a back up. This stipulation means that the prototype Typhon SBT 01 will be the safest, most reliable, and most advanced tank in Cobra’s arsenal for years to come.

In Greek Mythology, Typhon was a great and powerful dragon and the last of the Titans. Typhon was the son of the earth and the underworld and it was said that his hundred, horrible heads touched the stars, venom dripped from his evil eyes, and lava poured from his gaping mouths. Hissing like a hundred snakes and roaring like a hundred lions, he tore up whole mountains and threw them at the gods, he brought storm and destruction with him, destroying entire civilizations as he went.

I have always thought that Cobra has had a deficiency when it came to Heavy Armor, with the HISS IV for example I saw that it was only a turret-style machine gun, so I wanted to give them something that could give any country’s armored units a run for their money. I chose black as the main color because when I think of a Cobra Tank, I think of the original HISS color scheme - so I used the new body with an old color scheme, black and red. I like the way it turned out.
