Today the only companies that seem to be using the 2up process are the smaller, independent toy creators.
Four Horsemen sculpted 2ups for their new Power Lords reboot. SK Omega had sculpted 2ups for their line as well (pictured and linked below). The larger toy companies have of course moved on to sculpting 1:1 or just above 1:1, for example (as previously mentioned by nova).... sculpting at 104%.
As far as pre-production collecting goes, a 2up is usually the one thing "everyone" wants at least one of.
It is literally a giant action figure. Some can even move their joints etc. Some are of course glued or painted
into static positions. Some are even functional. For example the Star Brigade Replicator Hawk 2up's chest opens and the little alien can sit inside (see page 14 here:
http://www.joedeclassified.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Declassified_Report_06_2013.pdf). Some are not functional, like the Tusk 2up pictured below. (If you're not familiar with Toy Biz figures, the Tusk action figure has a slot in his back that opens up which stores the tiny Underling figure that comes with him. It is one of his powers, to sort of pop these tiny Underlings off of his back. The Tusk 2up, however, does NOT have this slot. With Toy Biz, some of the functionality was tooled overseas AFTER sculpting, not during or before like with G.I. Joe 2ups).
I've included these images of non-G.I. Joe 2ups to sort of celebrate the process as a whole. I'll post more
non-G.I. Joe 2ups later on in the month (waiting for some pics).
