Boss Fight Studio is curious what people would like to see for upcoming ankle articulation options. their ^male figures (that aren't Gorgons) have hinge and swivel ankles similar to most 4" articulated figures. There is the possibility they could offer rocker ankles (similar the GI Joe Jinx, Renegades Scarlett, Retaliation Snake Eyes, Retaliation GI Joe Trooper and everyone who has used those legs since). If you'd like to see something besides those two, please describe it or show an example for BFS to take note of.

'Right now' is a highly limited term since they've not shipped any of the legged ladies yet, who have the hinge/swivel rockers.

honestly, if the ladies have rocker ankles, I'm concerned. I was very relieved that the males did not. One, rockers decrease stability. The extra movement is in theory good, but in practice, that is one extra bit of movement which hinders posing more than it helps.

Two, the ONLY way rockers can work is if there is a lateral swivel at some other point in the leg. Thigh or calf usually work better than the mucked up hips that invoke a lateral turn. Rockers without the swivel hinder use even more because of not only the above point, but then also the inability to turn the feet inward or outward for any purpose.

Now, I will add that I haven't seen these in use on the females. And I'm still expecting to be blown away. BFS I'm sure knows these things, and have probably designed the perfect ankle to alleviate all of those concerns above.

In that event, I'll reserve the right to change my vote. But for now standard swivel hinge is just fine by me.

Other. Like on the Facebook poll, both are fine when used correctly. Most occasions I am more partial to the hinge swivel. There have been figures though that just offer a better pose when you have the ability to use the rocker joint to rotate the foot out better though too.

I have no experience with any of these problems.

Thigh swivels can be useful, but I've never found them vital with rockers, and calf swivels are universally stupid because humans don't have any swivel between the knee and ankle. The placement of the rocker pin going into the foot is very important, but problems with poor placement of that pin aren't properly solved by fracturing a person's tibia, imho. Thigh and calf swivels are usually done so loosely and ugly I usually just glue the thighs solid, and always glue the calves solid.

Figures are always better the closer they mimic actual human movement, imho.

when it comes to matters of articulation, you and I are usually on the same page AV. But here I think you're wrong. Take any of those Retaliation Joes with the rocker feet and tell me they are a better toy than ones with hinge and swivel. That joint bears too much of the figures weight to be allowing for the extra rocker movement, unless done perfectly, which I have yet to see.

You focused on just one of my points though - that you've got to be able to turn your leg or foot laterally at some point to mimic human movement, but more importantly to have stability of the toy. I wasn't advocating a swivel calf.

But you may as well have no ankle articulation at all if you're going to do rockers with no ability to stand upright with feet turned at least mildly outward.

I really like rocker ankles because they are more realistic, but the lack of a swivel thigh hurts its overall effectiveness.

Rocker ankles are the worst. All those action figures are friggin hobbled.

Hinge and swivel to be able to swap better and because they are better if you want to paint them and they look more realistic.

Non-rocker ankles suck. Rocker ankles are much better for stability and the only thing that allows a stance other than straight up and down without looking stupid. Feet should always be flat to the surface.

What about a ball jointed ankle. Similar to the current neck joint.
Pretty similar range of motion as a human ankle.
It would allow for tilt and upward/downward motion, and would still retain the inward/outward swivel.

AND potentially be more stable than most rockers available today. color me intrigued.

Although - and maybe bossfight is already do this - a rocker ankle the pegs not just into the foot (where the rock comes from), but also into the leg (to allow the swivel) could theoretically work - if the joint was tight enough to support the weight. That is perhaps just a different way of describing your idea?
