When did you make it? Why did you start? What have you learned since then?

My very, very first custom was a LBC mercenary named Cool Kid. He kind of looked like this.

Then in college, Toyfare had a GI Joe custom contest where you took any non-GI Joe character and made them a GI Joe. I had model paint and playdoh. After baking the playdoh for the hat, I melt crayons and sculpted it on with a knife over a candle flame. I lost, but it got the itch started until I came across the customs on yojoe right before they were moved to the Bivouac.

Other than spray painting a Bazooka jet black and painting some terrible camo on an Armadillo as a kid, these are my first figure and vehicle customs as an adult.

I had some lbcs as a kid. The only one a really remember well was backstop legs, gung ho 87 upper with a mercer head. He had a targat jet pack.

Other than that, my first painted customs are in the bivouac archive under "Kevin Shaw" the name of the friend who submitted them for me. This was back in the day before I had a computer and visited the bivouac at the library. 98-00 maybe.

I started with LBCs when it occurred to be I could took them apart. But I always built them right back afterwardd coz I never thought of having extra figures at the time.

Then we managed to get an extra Stormshadow and Scarlett. And tried to use markers on them. I still have "Destra", i think.

It was until ebay when I started getting extras for my collection that I really got into customizing.

My first real result was Frosty & the Snowman, which I promptly sent to joecustoms when I heard about the site.

I remember putting together some LBCs as a kid, but one of the first customs I made had been done after discovering this site back in 02/03, the figure was a Firefly using a 93 firefly head on a 02 dusty body. I didn't have paint so I used a black sharpie to make camo. It can be seen on this site.

I can't remember the absolute first custom I did, but I remember several about the same time.

1) I had a Snake-Eyes v2 break both thumbs. I noticed Flint's shirt matched perfectly, so Snake-Eyes ended up with bare arms, short sleeves, and brown gloves. Seeing the forearm Arashikage tattoo later on had me looking for other donor arms.

2) Took some OD paint to a pair of Flint legs, along with some other pieces. Not sure where they all went, but I have one figure using those legs somewhere today.

3) Took a big black marker and gave Recondo some streaks on his arms and face to give him some camo.

Technically my first ARAH style custom is Range Viper:

It's still one of my favorite customs to date.

I started customizing because I discovered Joecustoms!

I had traded for a scarlet in like 85, and she was straight armed and her left arm broke right away. So I swapped her arms and thighs for torpedo Arms and thighs,if i remember i had to make the lower leg holes bigger but other than that it worked pretty great.
