So the company I work for has been bought out. It was a retail chain, with me working in the back office. I'm the last person still working in the back office and my job will be gone within a couple of months. This is the first time in 25+ years of working that I've 'lost' a job. Every other time, I left the job, either for a better job or a move (or both), so I've never really had to look for a job, because I always had one and if I heard about something better, I could try for it at no risk.

Now, there is a lot of risk. The area I live in is not exactly booming with jobs in my area of expertise (IT), but moving isn't really an option, either. I'm going to try my hand at offering freelance support to individuals and small businesses, and between saved up vacation time and a fairly generous severance package, I'll have about 3 months to really get that gig going before things get dire. That doesn't keep it from being extremely scary, though.

Wish me luck!

Good luck.
Will keep you in prayers.
I know you said moving isn't an option, and I have no idea of your circumstances, but be willing to relocate opens up. More possibilities.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm really hoping the free-lance stuff pays the bills, but if not, who knows. Moving would be very difficult because we have a farm with livestock and a store my wife owns/operates, so moving would add the stress of either moving or selling the farm/livestock and moving/selling the store. I'm usually not a worrier, so the the way this is making me feel is pretty foreign to me, which makes it harder to be rational about it.

I wish you luck. it might be the best thing to ever happen :)

I've been the same as far as never really looking without already having a job. my current place of employment has been bought twice, and this time by a conglomerate that isn't really concerned with our side of the business. they could decide at a whim to shut down our shop and use a larger shop with far more employees and faster turn around.

Thanks, 2D2C. I'm actually pretty optimistic about my consulting gig. I've had some moonlighting jobs that will be using me more and have a couple prospects that look pretty good. Doesn't stop it from being scary, though.

you got this!

my next "phase" will be leaving the workforce to go on disability. I am dreading the idea, but it is my reality. I am going to hang in as long as possible!!

Dude, that sucks. Hopefully it's a good long while before that happens.
