Sorry DW, if I am spoiling your Secret Santa Gift, but I needed to get this up so that you have the context for your team, and I'll be offline for the next few days...

Deathwing's Squad.

When you are an international terrorist organization who deals weapons to every tin pot dictator, monstrous war criminal, or dim witted revolutionary you are always going to have one major problem - getting paid. In fact, when you only deal with people that are disreputable, dishonest and tend to believe that they can settle debts with a bullet, you are going to need one heck of a collections department. That's where Deathwing's Squad comes in. They collect what is owing, or make sure that the debts are paid... in blood.

Deathwing is a former Green Beret that was working to protect a small African village against the local warlord. At a critical moment, Deathwing was called back to Washington for what amounted to little more than a glorified photo op. He returned to the village to find the people he was protecting slaughtered to a man and the village razed to the ground. Deathwing went rogue. While hunting the warlord, Deathwing came across the warlord's weapon supplier - Cobra Commander himself.

Cobra Commander explained that he wanted the warlord too, but for an entirely different reason, and offered Deathwing a job, hunting down warlords that were unwilling to give Cobra their due, with the full backing of the Cobra Organization.

"I have done more good in my role working for Cobra, than I ever did in the Forces. Evil is what you make of it, I choose to make it die."

Slipknot

Slipknot was an Iron Grenadier with a habit of breaking into places that he shouldn't be. While this made him a great operative, it made him an even greater security risk to Destro's operations. Torn between promoting and executing him, Destro loaned Slipknot out to Deathwing's Squad as his resident silent and difficult entry specialist. When collecting from well armed bad guys, sometime you have to get in and out before the bad guy knows you're there. With Slipknot, getting in and out, without getting caught is the ultimate game.

"Give me a rope, a target and a time frame."

Upload

Upload was born to surf the internet. Hacking since he was 14, and building his own equipment since he was 15, he has been riding the crest of the electronic wave since you could only access the internet with a dial up modem. While as proficient a Televiper as Cobra has ever had, he also had a bad attitude about internal firewalls and requirement limited access rights. He was about to be executed out of hand for rigging the Televiper Visual Receptor to hook into Netflix, when the call came down for a computer extraction specialist. They sent him to Deathwing's Squad, and he's never looked back.

"He's great at siphoning funds out of an account, but on duty, you never know if he's keeping guard, or catching up on the last season of Mad Men in that helmet of his."

Bully doesn't need to work - he could easily live off all the lunch money he collected in grade school, the protection he charged the other students in high school, or the protection racket that he set up for local shop owners in Chicago to put himself through the Chicago School of Business. He is a man that truly believes that it is his manifest destiny to take money from others, be it by a sharp business transaction or by pulling it from their shattered bodies by the most violent means possible. While he joined Cobra to ride out the heat of killing some former business partners for cheating him, he wasn't looked upon kindly by the vipers as being too mean and greedy to blend into the regular corps. He took a transfer to Deathwing's Squad on the condition that he be paid a percentage of his recoveries.

"There's nothing more vicious than a collections agent, on commission, with a rifle"

Shakedown

Shakedown was a Headhunter, collecting money from drug addicted deadbeats in the scummy areas of Florida that even the Dreadnoks wouldn't touch. While he hated his job, he recognized that beating people up and taking their money was a limited skill set with few other applications. When his attempt to transfer to the typing pool failed horribly, he requested a transfer to Deathwing's Squad, in the hopes that he would be dealing with a slightly better class of criminal lowlife.

"Yes, I killed him - but he had a gun and he was standing upright, so you know, I can feel good about myself on that one. I'm also pretty sure he deserved it. You have to appreciate little things like that."

This team was created as My Secret Santa project for 2012. I sincerely hope that Deathwing likes it, as much as I enjoyed putting it together. I focused on base painting, detail painting, decals and washes for this one, applying what I've been learning in my Warhammer hobby to my joes. I really like the results. These guys were hard to let go, so I hope that they find a happy home at Deathwing's House.

I really like how the Warhammer transfers worked on this one. I really think that they pop.

Wow, that's a nice bunch of customs! Indeed the Warhammer transfers do look good on them.
I like Slipknot, because of the Storm Shadow torso. Excellent use of it.
Bully's gun is my absolute favorite thing of the whole set. Brilliant mods to the Ambush rifle, looks fantastic now!
I would've given Upload at least some of that blue, but that's the only crit I can think of.

Yep, the effort speaks for itself. And the bios are not surprisingly awesome. Good to see you back at it.

The colors work obviously, and the parts combos are pretty good too, but the weapons, especially the wood/leather painting looks phenomenal. I have the hardest time making finished wood look like wood. The decals are a nice touch on the thighs too. Almost missed those.

I love them... It's everything I expect from a Raptor Custom... Clean simple paint and an excellent witty bio..... This group would make an excellent spin off for the Evil Empire CGs.

I would tend to agree with Tim that Upload could have used a bit of the Blue...maybe on his helmet...

Do you know where Slipknot's head came from? I have a casting of that same head.. Is it one of Void's? or maybe J&R?

Only other figure I'd sqeek about is Deathwing... The Falcon head is pretty recognizable... something as simple as a 5 o'clock shadow would help disguise it a bit. Also that lone skull really stands out on his wrist... a couple more decals and some sharpie line work would go a long way in filling out his "sleeve".

Hm, I thought it was a "shaved" Iron Grenadier head......?

The Face Mask is smoothed as well as the Helmet Crest...I know I have a copy of that head in what looks to be Alumilite resin...I didn't buy it, so there are 3 likely places I got it from: the JoeCanuck Free table, The Project Give Back Box, or Beav's Fodder

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, I appreciate it. I've been out of the game, but I'm learning a lot in working with miniatures.

The all black on Upload kinda bugged me too, but I was trying a flat/gloss differentiation to try to get the boots to look shiny and the pants to look cloth while using the same color. Not sure if the effect is noticeable on the figure or not - but it's a technique I wanted to try out. Until the moment that Nova mentioned it, I never even thought about painting the helmet, which would have been a good call. He does seem to stand out from the team a little for the absence of the blue.

The wood finish is a result of using an Agrax Earthshade shade from Games Workshop over a yellow base. It's part of the new line of like 10,000 paints from GW, and it's the easiest thing to use ever. If you brush it on over a base color you get a leather or wood effect with very little effort, and you don't have to futz around with watering the paint and getting the right mixture - for once, it works right out of the bottle.

The head on Slipknot is indeed a Void cast, and has been sitting in my box o' special parts that I haven't been using because they were too special. ;-) Nova, the one that you got, you got from me in a trade in my basement a long time ago, if memory serves me right. It's an original cast which I believe is a mashup of a starwars figure and a joe one, but I could also be remembering it wrong. It's a fantastic piece, but it never got used because it's an army builder head, but I didn't have enough to build an army with it, so it stayed in the box with a few more really awesome pieces that I've been given over the years that I just couldn't fit in.

Full credit to Void if he's still lurking around. The guy was a master at this before anyone else was doing anything like it. I have some of his stuff that's like a decade old, and still compares favorably with anything that anyone makes today.

LOL, I went searching the net for "Void toys", because I didn't know what Nova was talking about. I thought Void was one of the numorous toylines from the 80's that didn't make it to Europe, hahaha!
But now I know again. I've actually got several of his customs saved in my "Inspirational customs file".
