My new Sci-Fi Diorama Backdrop! I created this diorama to be used as a backdrop for photography purposes, similiar to my Dungeon from last year.

This thing is HUGE- 28.5" long x 18.5" deep x 16.5" high.

Eventually I will install rare earth magnets in the walls of the bottom level for over 150 switch-out accessories so it can be used like a miniature movie set and be redressed as anything I need it to be (lab, cargo bay, hangar, command deck, etc.).

The base and second level are wood (for strength) covered with granny grate(for detail) while the walls are plastic. I used TONS of greebles for the detailing. The upper level features 3 fold down computer stations.

I've really grown to appreciate these large backdrops that can be used for multiple shots. This is nice and very usable.

Do you follow the Diostructure facebook group? If you don't, then you need to check them out, lots of stuff like this and on this scale.

I've enjoyed following your progress on this. It turned out really great. I recall seeing the first photo with a 4" scale figure and being shocked at the size of it in comparison. Seeing it now with that B-Wing really sends home the scale of this piece.

I do have a couple comments. First it looks like the corner of the second floor on the right is sagging a bit. Did you consider some angled supports underneath to help shore it up?

Second, is the second floor meant to be a cutaway of an entire floor or a walkway above the lower floor? I ask because I think it could do with some type of railing just to help finish out the look. Even a short piece of trim along the bottom edge, to me, would give it that finished look.

But man, the details are amazing. When I read there were computer stations I had to really look to see where they were before I saw the detail shots of them. They blend in seamlessly with the walls which I think is a great look.

Overall I'm really impressed with this. The level of detail, though minimal, is amazing and really great quality especially at this scale. Well done.

Also one last question, what is this "granny grate" you mention using for the detail? I'm assuming that is the floor material. It looks like something we all could use in our dio and playset building and I'd like to know more about it.

I love the way it looks. To me, it looks like it's straight out of a Star Wars movie, the walls and the colors are perfect.

And finally, a good use for all those tech chip things!

Thanks everyone.

To answer a few questions:

Granny Grate is a nickname used in miniature gaming circles for the plastic canvas available at most craft stores. It is usually used for latch hook knitting but when painted up resembles a grid work or grated flooring.

It does look like the edge of the upper floor sags a bit in the pics but I think it might be a deep focus issue when I took the pic as figures stand level on it unaided.

The second floor is meant to be a walkway. I decided against railings as, if you look at the movies, railings do not seem to exist in most places in the Star Wars Universe (I believe Bespin is the only exception.).

Next month I will be ordering several dozen rare earth magnets and begin painting all of the accessories I am designing and building for this dio.

Very nicely done Spec!

Love the versatility of it, and the fact it's a permanent piece that is still multi-use once you add the magnets.

I have some similar multi-use sets, but none are permanent structures.
