Thanks for looking everybody, as members of Joecustoms presents:

The 50th Fun Fix!

A handful of members here at the site answered bucky's challenge, to take excess fodder from the last couple of waves, swap some parts around, boil and pop some limbs, and break out the brushes in order to make something cool from the 50th waves. A couple of guidelines were in place, as in no excessive modding or sculpting, and trying to keep it within the last couple of years. Use what you have laying around, get a part here and there from your neighborhood castor, and get to work!

We've got 7 days worth of fun to showcase, featuring the works of danielb, Joemichaels70, HypnoHustler, Oreobuilder, and bucky.

DAY 1:

Hard Drive by Danielb!

Image
Image

Hard Drive pretty easy build, using a random joe head (Steeler?) that didn't get a lot of use the SE torso, and dollar store legs upgraded with a holster. Throw in some appropriate gear and there you go.

SGT. Hacker by Danielb!
Image
Image
Parts:
All Poc Beachhead, with a Quinn head. Trying to use some under utilized parts something I think the 50th should make their goal to use as many good parts as possible.

Day 2:

[b]Voltar by Bucky!

At the last Con, I had a list of figures that I needed to fill spots in the Modern Era Collection. Some of them are only available from previous Con sets. As I rounded the salesfloor throughout the weekend, I realized that I wasn't about to spend the type of money they command. I just can't. As a customizer first, and collector second, I just decided I'd make my own and be happy. If a retail version comes out at a later date that is nicer, I usually switch them at that point, but obvious I can't do that with a Con figure. Voltar was just too easy and perfect when I saw the SAW Viper coming out. I quickly scrounged what cast parts I could and ordered the rest at a later date, finally getting around to starting him last fall. I had to trim down the collar a bit to make the head fit right, but outside of painting some details, that was about the only mod needed.
Head, Helmet, Pack and Gun: Raginspoon
Bird: Angel Forge
Vest: Tornado Kick Snake Eyes with holster attached.
Rest: 50th Saw Viper

Falcon by Oreobuilder!
I believe that most of us agree that the "classic" colors Lt Falcon that was released in the 25th anniversary could be improved on. Although we have gotten a couple more modern era Falcon figures with better parts in the last few years, we still don't have a figure that combines both aspects (classic colors and modern parts). With this repaint of the recent 50th anniversary version, I'm hoping to fill that gap.

Parts
Everything: 50th (2016) Falcon

Day 3:

Wolf Squad Recondo, Wolf Squad Stretcher, and City Strike Iron Grenadier by danielb!

Wolf Squad Stretcher:

Image
Stretcher combines fiftieth Stalker and firefly. I like the idea of all the joe medics having the same basic uniform and gear. I used the roc RC head because he's not my Ripcord lol. But I think he could be a good Stretcher.

Wolf Squad Recondo:

Wolf pack Recondo was made using the underwhelming Falcon as the base, with a much better pair of legs and gear appropriate for Recondo.

Day 4:

Breaker by Oreobuilder!
I can't take any credit for this custom. A few years ago at New Jersey Comic Con, Boss Fight Studios showed off some awesome custom GI Joe figures. One of those figures was a modern take on Breaker, GI Joe's original communications specialist. Their version was a great mix of vintage (headset) and modern (vest, armour) elements. I changed some parts from their version according to what I had in my fodder box.

Parts
Head: 50th (2015) Shipwreck
Torso, upper arms: 50th (2014) Hawk
Lower arms: PoC Duke
Upper legs: 50th (2014) Lowlight
Lower legs: 50th (2014) Beachhead
Vest: 50th (2016) Snake Eyes
Backpack, helmet, headset: vintage accessory packs

Tactical Airtight by bucky!

danielb brought this idea for "tactical Airtight" once, and I had it in my head for awhile. I decided to give it a shot, an Airtight that while still carrying his gear, isn't necessarily all geared up like he usually is for Hostile Environment Missions. I was able to score the extra Tiger Force gear at the "lets make a deal" table at the Con.
Head: Tiger Force Airtight
Gear: Tiger Force Airtight
Upper Body, Lower Legs: 50th Duke
Upper Legs: Data Viper

Outback by Oreobuilder!
At the end of 2016, I was on a New Sculpt kick. I made several customs from that era in modern era construction. One of the figures that I had on my to-do list was DTC Outback. I'm a bit lazy when it comes to stickers and labels, so I set him aside for a later date. I was waiting for the 2016 50th line to be released to have access to his "Survival" shirt. Laziness aside, I did want to replicate the DTC version's awesome head. Thankfully, AVAC came to my rescue by offering it in his store.

Head: AVAC cast
Harness: 25th Arctic Snake Eyes
Everything else: 50th (2016) Outback

Day 6:

Action Man , G.I. Jane, Lt. Stone, and Sgt. Savage by HypnoHustler!

Sgt. Savage:
While this figure uses the G.I. Joe Extreme design as inspiration, this figure is meant to pay tribute to the Sgt. Savage line as a whole. I just prefer the Extreme look, since it's a bit more unique, and it was easier to achieve using 50th parts. Sgt. Savage is the only direct link between the Real American Hero and Extreme universes, as several 80s era Joes appeared in the single Sgt. Savage cartoon episode and Savage's origin is confirmed to be the same in the later Extreme cartoon. While Extreme and Real American Hero are intended as completely separate universes, Sgt. Savage gives me all the reason I need to combine the two.

Head:MU Cable
Torso: 50th Bazooka
Arms and Legs: 50th Gung-Ho
Image

Action Man:

In the UK, G.I. Joe was Action Man. Same toys in many cases, but with a name that was less overtly American. As in the US, Joe was quite successful there, outlasting his American run. In the 80s, Action Man became Action Force, which then eventually became G.I. Joe but the 3 3/4th line wasn't the enduring success. In the 90s a new Action Man line was launched, and in this case, Action Man was actually an individual, a James Bond type fighting the villainous Dr. X from a space station with his own supporting cast. The Action Man toyline and cartoon came back across the ocean to the states, but failed to catch on. This custom takes it's inspiration from the figure included in the Toys R Us exclusive Night Force set, which was simply a repaint of the earlier Tracker figure. Prototypes of Tracker in Night Force colors exist, so the reason for the switch to Action Man is a bit odd. Was the Tracker trademark expired? Did they realize they needed to re-up the Action Man trademark? I definitely don't know, but the orange and black color scheme used for the figure is much more appealing than the blue on blue look Action Man sported in his own cartoon, so I went this way for my own version.
Head: Custom Cast
Torso: 50th Cobra Trooper
Arms: 50th Dusty
Legs: 50th Snake-Eyes

G.I.Jane

I believe Jane holds the distinction of being the first ever female action figure. Of course, "action figure" is just a term Hasbro came up with to avoid import taxes on dolls, but it's still a milestone. In the 60's 12 inch line, Jane was a nurse. In an issue of the Marvel G.I. Joe comic commemorating the 25th anniversary of the original G.I. Joe toy, Larry Hama brought back the original Joe and Jane. Jane went back to school, got a PhD, and now runs a secret orbital laser facility based out of the Empire State Building for the military. Not a bad career arc at all. This figure is inspired by the only 3 3/4th in Jane figure, which was included in a Toys R Us exclusive 6 pack. It's a more combat ready look for her, which gives the figure a bit more versatility for me.

Head: Viper Lockdown set
Torso: 50th Shooter
Arms: 50th Lady Jaye
Legs: 50th MASS Device Cobra Trooper

Lt. Stone:
Lt. Stone was essentially the Duke of G.I. Joe Extreme. The blond, crewcutted, fatigue wearing leader. Your basic, unaltered "hero" template. This figure is inspired by his original figure. Not a whole lot to say about him, but as someone who really likes a good chunk of the Extreme designs, if not the toys themselves, you kinda have to have him.

Head: Build N Brawl Chris Jericho
Torso: 50th Chuckles
Upper Legs: 50th Outback
Lower Legs: 50th HEAT Viper
Arms: 50th Spirit upper, 50th Shipwreck lower

Day 7 Brings us Duke vs. Tombstone, an actual 2 pack, slightly tweaked.

Day 7:

Duke by Bucky!

I'm a Duke fiend. I'm willing to bet I've made more Duke customs than any other character. I think I've averaged a Duke custom of some sort for the last several years, and sometimes more than one a year. I like the guy.
I experimented with washes quite a bit on this version, using blacks, reds, browns. The red was amazing, bringing out a detail in the face that looks incredible compared to stock. The stock version was fairly close to being cool, but the skintight vest and super puffy arms makes him a little jarring. Rather than switch the arms up, I just decided on a Heavier vest that flows much better.
Head, torso and arms: 50th Duke
Upper Legs: 50th Firefly
Lower Legs: Renegades Ripcord
Vest: 50th Saw Viper

I like the use of that vest and backpack for Hi-Tech and PoC Beachhead legs work well for Hacker.

Cool idea for a project. It would also make for a great GP in the future.

Great use of the SAW Viper to make a completely playable Voltar. Another one, that may steal...

Good to see Stretcher getting some love. He's like the Joes middle child, he often gets overlooked... I also like that build for Recondo. It's a cool modern take on him.

These are all excellent.

I to have a soft spot for Stretcher. I remember buying him while on vacation when I was about 10 I think. I always thought his original design was really well done, just enough "Star Wars" to him to look cool, but still modern and believably military.

That Falcon is just perfect.
