I have been working on this one for years.

this is where I was with it. I was hopeful but the base cab (hotwheels car hauler) was not a very good sculpt. no windows or doors either.
Image

I scored this ij truck for a few bucks several weeks ago.i like it although it looks a bit older than the actual rig.
Image

I chopped it up, and started a new frame from a newbrite rig. Tonka front wheels and pte? rear to better match the movie rig. printer cartridge sleeper lol
Image

the cab is just sitting on the frame and needs to be leveled a bit in this shot. also need to lower the goblin a good bit. the running board/chrome tanks are Tonka.
Image

Image

still lots to figure out. i'm thinking hard about stretching it about 1". I did find some chatter about the movie rig being a "short" version though. let me know what you guys think. i'm open to ideas to get me closer to the movie rig. I have a pair of the big canister detail pieces, but only 1 perfect smokestack. I also cut the running boards off the ij rig to use for big mirrors.

Great start. Yes it needs at least an inch. You need to at least get your tires out from under your sleeper. Please build a plastic sleeper and not just leave it cardboard, too cool for a cardboard filler to be used.

Maybe pull the front bumper off of the other truck for a more modern big rig feel.

Also you need to give the rear a little lift to raise the fenders off of the tires a little.

When you build your real sleeper you want it to be a little wider then the cab and more even with the width of the tires.

WOW. This has been on my 'dream project' list for a long time, but this is way better than anything I would have put together. I'm a huge Stephen King fan. I can't wait to see this done.

wow! that tranny!

thanks for all the comments!

glad you are helping out dremel! with your mask rig dominating my dreams/nightmares of tackling this rig :)

"Great start. Yes it needs at least an inch. You need to at least get your tires out from under your sleeper. "
this is my 2nd or third start !! i'm leaning towards not stretching it, although it would look better.

here is another ref pic. really hard to find more than just a few pics. it is a weird "white" brand rig.
Image

"Please build a plastic sleeper and not just leave it cardboard, too cool for a cardboard filler to be used. "
that's 3 plastic printer cartridges glued together then glued to the back. if I decide to make it bigger I will just cover it with material.

"Maybe pull the front bumper off of the other truck for a more modern big rig feel."
I have that bumper ready and also some metal that might work better.

"Also you need to give the rear a little lift to raise the fenders off of the tires a little."
that's a tough one. right now I drilled a hole and stock my axles through. if I raise it then i'd need entire new supports front and back. I just glued on front fenders I cut from the Tonka front end.

"When you build your real sleeper you want it to be a little wider then the cab and more even with the width of the tires. "
maybe it is just the angles but it looks like the sleeper is narrower than the rear wheels.

if anyone can help with better source pics i'd be grateful!

It really needs the stretch it will be worth the work because it will be easy to stretch. Just cut the frame right behind the cab and add the extra directly under where the sleeper is. Your fifth wheel (the trailer hitch) would be centered directly in the center of those 4 wheels and with this current set up it would not have room to make corners. I would probably extend it to where the front of that fender is even with the back of the sleeper.

Yes the sleeper is narrower then the wheels themselves but considerably wider then the cab. I would probably make the sleeper about the same width as your rear fenders.

When I was building the Rhino one of the things that gave me trouble was the fifth wheel hitch. Designing rounded items out of styrene can be difficult. My local thrift store always had a box of remotes for 50 cents or $1 each. I picked one with a basic shape I liked and bought it and cut it up to use to build my hitch.

very valid stuff dremel.

I tried the ij factory wheels to give the "gap", but my new front fender and the body lift make them look terribly small.
Image

not ready to just give up I tried the ij frame with my chosen wheels. I think it adds 1/2", but in the right place. it will be more work to add in the 5th wheel and other details, but I like it.

and with the frame swap I can cut/lengthen it if need be.

Looks good but I think you still need another half an inch or so on the frame.

On a side note, if you haven't read the story about the fate of the original Green Goblin truck head, it's worth a look.
