I love videogames like Carmageddon and Twisted Metal, I played them a lot when I was a teenager. I really like the kind of cars in those games, customised and upgraded with all kinds of armour and weapons. That's exactly the theme for this NJC: Battle Cars!
Entries from all kinds of media are allowed: videogames (Twisted Metal, Carmageddon), cartoons (M.A.S.K., Wacky Races), tv series, comics and movies (Death Race, Mad Max).

Note: the cars must "exist" as Battle Cars in their original source. For example Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine with added guns and rockets has never existed in the cartoon, so that's not allowed.
Driver(s) are allowed with your Battle Car, but not mandatory.

Deadline will be October 31st.

Does it have to be modeled after an existing car or can it be Twisted Metal, Mad Max, Carmageddon, etc "inspired"? Sort of like take what you have and make it fit into that game or movie.

It has to exist in some form of media in Battle Car mode. Now it could have been a one off episode where it appeared like that, but you'd have to be able to point to a source where it appeared that way. Now obviously you can take some liberties for the custom itself, but there are way too many cars out there for this to have to make something up.

So if I understand this right, a Wacky Races 'alt mode' of a vehicle is okay, or a cartoon 'alt mode' of the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard cartoon is okay, but a custom vehicle based on a piece of art work found online is not valid?

Reading the post above yours it looks like any form of media, like cartoons, movies, books(maybe) or art work. At least that's how I read it.

NJC Guidelines: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=10724

And from those guidelines:

- What is the goal of this challenge?
The goal is to make 1:18 Media (Film/TV/Literature/Web/Video Game) - Based Characters in a given/limited amount of time.

Mario Kart with a group of "friends" is the most vicious game of battle cars ever created. Heat seeking spiked turtles, giant bullets, fake power-up booby traps, thems battle cars if I ever heard them.

super joe customs cart was a GP idea. wouldn't be as cool for a NJC since making joe characters is out. dusty's cobra commander cart was way cool and i'm holding 2 karts in the hopes of a GP.
