Thank you man!

Dr. Goldfaust is awesome! Hadn't seen him before! Making these dudes is so liberating. They work in so many 'verses and it's a blast seeing scales mesh together!

Oh that is a fun idea. Man these are getting me amped.

Pluv! Thank you, brotha!

Fun idea, but the build could have been a little less frustrating. Finding the proper helmet/head combo that is functional AND doesn't look absurd is truly the challenge.

If you can't get a BBI head, I'd maybe check the Valor vs. Venom/Spy Troops-era Joe heads that run small (Red Dot (sp?)).

Excellent! Really like what you're doing with all these.

Thank you sgcaper! Taking a pause from the Palookas, but staying in the scale and revisiting some old friends... got three new figures I still need to photograph...

Keep it locked...

MARIO: PROTECTOR OF THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM

Image

The last few months of 2016, I've been experimenting with a new way of choosing projects and working:

Whatever I feel like building, have the most fun fabricating, and get the furthest along in 48 hours gets completed. Whatever takes too long usually goes back on the worktable until it's ready... like this guy.

Image

Mario has been planned for a year. Parts were set aside, accessories cobbled together, but I never really got around to the build. While playing Mario Run, I thought it might be kinda cool to have a teeny Mario. Dusted off the WIP and a couple days later, he was done.

Image

Mario is almost 100% Mega Bloks. Body is WW2 CoD figure, head & hat are from an Assassin's Creed figure. Mustache was sculpted. The hands are GI JOE gloves I found in my fodder bin. Overalls are a pocket grafted onto some MB gear.

The yellow cape was made using a LEGO cape as a pattern, and the hammer was kitbashed from LEGO & Star Wars bits...

Thank you, dude!

My Luigi WIP was pieced together same time as Mario, so I just gotta stop being lazy and get him done! It's funny I didn't complete him first. Luigi was always my favorite as a kid.

Wario & Waluigi are musts, as well as a bunch of Koopas and other enemies. Even got a Yoshi planned, but no guarantees about being able to give Mario a lift.

Our intrepid plumber prefers other transport... like go-karts...

That's awesome.

Of course, now you need to build a pipe-laden playset for him.

Thank you, Spin Doctor!

Playsets are very much in the works for 2017. First I want to make some for my Dianauts, but a Super Mario set would be rad!

Getting some really cool concepts together for future Mario Bros. photos & projects. Can't wait to share!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYBODY!

SUPER MARIO BROS: PROTECTORS OF THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM

Mega Bloks Call of Duty figures are pretty much the perfect base for Mario & Luigi's weird, stylized proportions. While working with a lot of Mega Bloks this year, I slowly began setting aside the fodder.

They ended up the last custom of 2016 (Mario) and first of 2017...

Image

Like his brother, Luigi is a MB Call of Duty body with Assassin's Creed head & hat. Also like Mario, his gloved hands are from a GI JOE, taken from my fodder bin.

Image

The head is different from the one used for Mario, and I also gave Luigi's mustache a different look as well. Each needed to have their own, distinct look and personalities.

They're brothers, but not twins ;-)

Image

Now that the brothers have been built, the plan is to expand their arsenal beyond a sledge hammer, and make a ton of enemies.

We're just getting started in Mushroomland...

Great work on the Bros! I really admire your drybrushing and shading.
Your Luigi's face also reminds me of Bazooka, but I don't mean that in a bad way at all!

Sweet, I'm looking forward to all of this! I've got a lot of fond memories of the Super Mario games. :like:

Thank you Tim!

Got curious one day what Mega Bloks WW2 soldiers would look like painted up realistically to look like the Mario Bros. instead of the more cartoon style... the proportions are still very much like the game, so the figs are still stylized.

YES!!! I see the Bazooka resemblance for sure! It's funny you mention it, since he was giving me a Gung-Ho/Leatherneck vibe, too. Bazooka makes sense, though, since I loved his figure as a kid.

Getting inspired to work on some villains now, but I'm keeping it very freeform: I'm building what speaks to me the most, instead of meticulously planning pieces that may never come to pass.

That said, I've got a unique take on a classic Mario baddie that I can't wait to share!

Me too! I've loved the Mario games ever since the first 8-bit Nintendo!

Gonna work on some bad guys, some weapons, and even some playsets in the planning/design stages, very much in line with this aesthetic.

I'd love to make some karts for them, but I'm debating between building my own or modding some of the JAKKS stuff. The drivers look to be about the same scale.

NEXT TIME:

Shifting gears a little bit, away from Mushroomland and heading into the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Finally ready to debut some more of my customs from my sci-fi verse!

Thanks dude! I think it's because I always liked Luigi's game sprite more as a kid, hahaha!

Going to be warping over to the Mushroom Kingdom shortly to continue my work. Just got a little side-tracked with a super-fun, random sci-fi project that I've just been goin' with.

Intercepted a transmission from a "Dr. Light," mentioning evil robot drones, or something, and a synthetic hero... :shifty:

These are so much fun. The MB format just makes for some fun, fast customs. You should do a King Koopa from one of the TMNT figures (if your Target is like mine, you can find them for like $1.18 each right now on clearance).

QUICK UPDATE...

So, I've been working on a bunch of allies, heroes, villains, aliens, whatever to go with my Dianauts, made from a variety of lines, but usually Mega Construx. Gonna start sharing them very soon, but in the meantime, here's a quick shot I managed to get today when the sun came out briefly:

Image

Buncha random stuff bashed onto a MB HALO body. Got a bunch of these in all kinda colorways...

Was always partial to certain aesthetics as a kid, but medics and firefighters were usually one of my go-tos (divers & arctic specialists, too).

This little dude is a throwback to those toys I loved as a kid, though he doesn't really have a name just yet. I see him as a medical droid that assists the Dianauts with any heavy tasks in the field...

Image

...Lots more cool s___ on the way; keep it locked...
