A bureaucratic screw up left Chief without a unit or reporting position, and he was wandering the halls of the Pentagon trying to resolve his paperwork when he found himself stuck in an elevator with General Hawk for a few hours during a power failure. After exchanging about a thousand great war stories, Hawk asked him to consider trying out for the team.

As a Chief Warrant Officer, Chief can command small team detachments, provide leadership for vehicles full of mechanized infantry, occasionally lead rotary winged aircraft crews and act as father, mother, and occasionally the sadistic older brother to the regular troops.

Generally considered a technical expert, he is expected to provide insight and expertise to commanders in the field. In Chief's case, he will often provide this type of assistance and advice even if it was not requested, and even occasionally when he's been told not to.
