When I started the EXCAL story, I had Duke be a character that had been killed off. I liked the original figure as a kid but, like many, had grown to dislike the character as portrayed over the years since.

Several things changed along the way to make me want to do this. First, Channing Tatum so butchered the character for me, that I started to grow a nostalgic fondness for the original version. Second, I started customizing other Joe characters to make them fit with the coolest way I could envision each of them (most all being characters I had figures of as a kid). And third, the POC Dukes started to use a uniform head that screamed Duke, and provided the added benefit of different heads (bandana, headgear, plain) that all still looked like the same guy.

With those pieces all lining up, I decided to ret-con Duke into my EXCAL verse, setting it up so that his earlier murder had been staged. He has now made a triumphant return, and is presently trying to coordinate the reformation of the Joe team, even separate from the EXCAL organization.
