While believed to have perished in the explosion of Kwinn's grenade, Dr. Venom in fact lived on. His injuries were horrific with loss of limbs and severe burns, but he clung to life as Cobra Commander ordered Destro to secretly place him in a stasis pod designed for the Commander in case he fell in battle. The pod would sustain life until he could be saved or until Cobra Commander may need it.

During his many years in the stasis pod, he was plugged into the Brainwave Scanner to keep his mind from going dead. It also kept him current on Cobra technologies which Cobra Commander relished. If Dr. Mindbender slipped up and had to be eliminated, Dr. Venom could replace him seamlessly once he was resurrected. Eventually, Cobra technologies advanced enough to transform him into a cyborg using B.A.T. technology. Due to the cyborg process implanting B.A.T. software as well as hardware, the new Dr. Venom not only possessed his devious genius, but incredible strength and combat skills.
