File Name: Pierce, James M.
Primary Military Specialty: Intelligence
Secondary Military Specialty: Marksmanship Instructor

As a child, Deadeye was fascinated by two things: speed and accuracy. He satisfied his need for the former by absorbing as much information about motorcycles as he could, and for the latter by spending his remaining free time practicing with a BB pistol. By the time he was sixteen, Deadeye had already become a certified motorcycle repairman and won several marksmanship competitions. Upon graduating from college with degrees in physics and industrial design, Deadeye began working for a leading motorcycle manufacturer. He quickly became bored with the minutia of industrial design and enlisted in the Army in the hopes of rediscovering his love of marksmanship. Deadeye graduated top of his class at the Army's Ranger Training Course and set several records as captain of the Army Pistol Team. He again grew weary of the tedium of army life and resigned his commission. Deadeye spent the next three years as a mercenary, working only when he found the assignment "ideologically acceptable." At some point, he ended up in the employ of the CIA, having made many connections in his time as a mercenary that the government found useful. General Hawk became aware of Deadeye's work for the CIA and decided that someone with his unique qualifications would be invaluable to G.I. Joe. Deadeye was designated a Warrant Officer and assigned to the Joe team.

From General Hawk's Files: "A lot of old soldiers have a sort of 'seen-it-all' attitude: they think they've got it all figured out, and they try to pretend that nothing surprises them. Deadeye's a different breed: he's done more than most people, but he doesn't seem to notice. A lot of the guys don't like him because everything comes easy for him. He can out-shoot and out-ride anyone on the team, and he can learn anything in half the time is takes the rest of them. Our challenge is keeping him from getting bored: when he gets bored, he takes off, and we can't afford to lose him."
