Grainger is a "former" Marine, because if you call him an ex-Marine he will stomp your guts out and eat them with a dirty fork.

Contrary to popular belief he was honorably discharged and highly decorated. He just got tired of the good old U.S. Govt. getting soft and pushed around by anybody that wanted to show off. So he went merc and discovered while the pay was a real motivator, it didn't always bring out the best teammates. After a very nasty bit of "wet work/extraction" for an up and coming drug company in South Africa, in which he ended up with the better part of a five story pharmaceutical lab on his back. Half the group that he started the job with were dead in the same rubble and the remaining A-holes were either to busy running off with the "product" or just plain running.

Later while recovering in the hospital he decided "Zero Tolerance" was the rule in life. No longer did the payday matter if the jerks around you aren't man enough to handle mission. If he ever got the chance he'd hand pick and forge his team to do the job.

After being released he stepped into the local watering hole and overheard a gentleman talking about a job he'd done that imploded a building in the recent past. Curious as to whom this may be, old Grainger decided to intro himself by kicking the snot out of the group's speaker.

After cleaning house with the table's occupants, it was down to him and the speaker. The speaker, impressed with the speed and ferocity at the hands of this party crasher mentioned that he would like to make him an offer. If he defeated the speaker the next round was on him but if he lost, he had to swallow 6 ounces of C4. Grainger took the bet and won, and after 15 rounds of shots (and a minor concussion) had the demo guy drunk under the table. When one of the formerly KO'd grunts came to and found them both drunk he spilled the beans on the whole drug job being a front to get a certain doctor some hi-tech meds to make a bioweapon for Cobra.

At that moment he decided to work for Cobra. And after he found out he beat the crap out of 7 (on furlow) Alley Vipers (and Firefly to boot) he felt they could use a little Marine Motivation in the ranks. And since then he has pressed himself and his "ape squad" through more details and FUBAR assignments than any other.
