Savage was one of Cobra's experiments that went wrong. Dr. Mindbender used a Range Viper corps and transferred animal organs and tissue to bring him to life. When awaken he was violent and destroyed Mindbenders lab. He escaped the compound. He was living in the wilderness and feeding off animals and insects. He was later caught in a trap set by the G.I. Joe team. For many months the G.I.Joes didn't know what to do with him so they decided on trying to use him for there advantage. They put him through Marine Boot Camp and trained him as a soldier. Although he can't speak, he was a quick learner and soon joined the Joe team.
