One of the challenges with the NGW concept is taking all existing molds and trying to make entirely new characters of them, which can be a challenge when using relatively prolific character like Duke.
When fleshing out the first wave of NGW characters, I knew the team was going to need a strong field leader. This figure had already been pieced together, intended as an update to Duke for a different subset altogether.

As soon as he could walk and talk, Vanguard had been prepped to be a soldier. He's a third generation Airborne Infantry man, as well as a skilled pilot. He is extremely proficient in piloting the new Battle Pod assault craft. He may have been taught soldiering starting at an early age but he was born leader. In leading a new team of Joe's, Gen. Hawk didn't have to interview many candidates, he knew Vanguard was the man for the job.

"Vanguard will often be found dive bombing Cobra's in his meteoric Battle Pod, but he's much more comfortable leading troops from the front line. He is soldier through and through. He's honest, and loyal. You can rely on him to do the right thing no matter the cost. You could say, he's the complete opposite of fellow team member, Black Jack.
