Living in Malibu, Craig S. McConnell was a surfer, weight lifter, and bass guitar player. As a teenager, he was badly injured after wiping out under a broken dock. A man pulled Craig out of the water and carried him to shore. Later he learned the man had been a famous local hero known as to surfers as Shotgun Don before becoming an Army Ranger. The incident left a lasting impression on young McConnell that would eventually lead him to enlist.

While on leave, Craig McConnell was surfing under the Golden Gate Bridge with his girlfriend Minh when the Bridge exploded. Minh was killed in the blast.

Its later revealed that the Golden Gate Bridge Bombing, was the work of a man known as Firefly. McConnell quits the Army and tries to hunt down the man responsible for Minh's death. Traveling alone for some time, he teams up with a mysterious man called Snake-Eyes. Together they stalk Firefly to Saudi Arabia, even though Firefly escapes Snake-eyes is impressed with the former surfer. After the battle in the Middle East, Craig is asked to join GI JOE.
