Vlad was a Red Shadow on his day off. Loyal to the cause, he was helping out with some of Baron Ironblood's and Red Laser's experiments. Seeking a "supersoldier" formula, Ironblood and Laser didn't quite have the serum perfected when Vlad agreed to drink a pint as a bet. The formula did grant him super strength and resilience to pain, but also drained the life from him and instilled a primeval urge to consume human flesh.

Due to the sudden danger of Vlad consuming his fellow troops, he was soon reappointed as an interrogation specialist - in as much as any prisoner who is believed to hold information is simply locked in a room with Vlad, who in turn starts to eat the prisoner from the feet up. It is said all prisoners who have ever been "interrogated" by Vlad have spilled every scrap of their secrets even before their toes have all been eaten. Unluckily for them, even after all their information has been gained, Vlad continues his feast until no fiber of the prisoner remains.
