The son of a West German diplomat and a US doctor, Hazmat joined the Navy at age eighteen to pay for medical school. Graduating with a Ph. D in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Due to his specialty and knowledge of epidemiology and biological weapons, it is believed that Hazmat operated several times with SEAL teams around the world, including Operation: Desert Storm.

After accepting an offer from the Centers for Disease Control, Hazmat, as a Health Services Officer, was assigned to the Epidemic Intelligence Service. Investigating viral outbreaks in a dozen countries, he often found himself in Africa, many times having to enter Hot Zones in the middle of a war zone.

It is believed his wife, a National Geographic photographer, gave him his codename when she said he was "dangerous stuff".
