The UAZ 466s' mission is to provide a light tactical vehicle for all areas of the modern battlefield. The UAZ 466 is equipped with a high performance 8-cyl. Multi-fuel engine (UMZ 452M), automatic transmission, four wheel drive, 2-speed transfer box with front axle disconnect, hydraulic brakes, and a CTI/Run flat system.

It is air transportable and droppable from a variety of aircraft. The UAZ 466 can be equipped with a self-recovery winch capable of up to 6000 pound 1:1 ratio line pull capacity and can support payloads from 2,500 - 4,400 pounds depending on the model. The vehicles can climb 60% slopes and traverse a side slope of up to 40% fully loaded. The vehicles can ford hard bottom water crossing up to 30 inches without a deep water fording kit and up to 60 inches with the kit.

The UAZ 466 is produced in several configurations to support weapons systems; command and control systems; and ammunition, troop and general cargo transport.
The UAZ 466cZ is the command and control vehicle of the 466 family. Designed to carry various radios and combat communications equipment. It has only one light duty hard point for mounting a DShK 12.7mm MG.

The UAZ 466A is the Armament Carrier configuration of the 466 family. The vehicles are equipped with basic armor and the weapon mount, located on the roof of the vehicle, is adaptable to mount either the DShK 12.7mm or the KPVT 14.5mm machine gun; or the AT-13 Metis M Missile Launcher. The weapons platform can be traversed 360 degrees.
