Maverick gained notoriety in 1986 after and incident in the Indian Ocean in which one of the Navy's communication ships became disabled and wandered into foreign waters. Maverick was a hero that day shooting down multiple MiGs despite having lost his best friend and RIO, Goose just a few short days earlier. After the battle Maverick was given his choice of duty and decided to join the G.I. Joe team as an instructor pilot.
