Howard Martin Murdock was a born pilot. From the time he could walk he was in cockpits with his father. He got his pilots license at age 12 and logged more hours by the time he graduated high school than some commercial airline pilots rack up in a career. However the seemingly boring and repetitive nature of commercial air travel wasn't nearly interesting enough to Murdock so he joined the military where he quickly became an expert pilot in just about all major aircraft. He was noticed by General Hawk and was one of the last recruits the General signed up before his retirement and eventual murder. Taking the codename Gyro, Murdock is more than capable of piloting any of the Joe teams advanced aircraft however he prefer the new Sky Hawk. From the pilot seat of his Sky Hawk, Gyro leads the Joes in air combat against Cobra.
