I just received my Christmas present to myself in the mail Thursday and was looking for some unique hobby helping apps to install on it.

I am looking for a decent photoshop type app. My idea is to be able to take images and turn them into something I could use as file card art. So maybe removing a word balloon from a comic panel and replacing that area with matching background color.

I want to be able to do something like this: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=26905&p=296389&hilit=Airborne+photoshop#p296389

I would also like to be able to upload a picture, like maybe one from a GIJOE coloring book, and then select colors to bring it to life.

As always, suggestions appreciated.

OK...

During my move this past summer/fall, I packed my old laptop away. I also found my supply of 3.5 inch floppy discs (unused) AND my small stack of 3.5 inch floppy discs that I had formatted and stored data on.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario 1610 and I believe the battery is shot. I have searched online for a new one, to no avail.

I have no idea what is still on the laptop and I would like to find out. It powers on when plugged in, with the display lighting up, but it doesn't charge. It stays at 0%.

I even bought one of those universal replacement laptop chargers (aka the brick) as the first step in troubleshooting. Plugging that 'cord' in in addition to the original cord yields the result mentioned above. That lead me to the battery diagnosis.

Where does this leave me?

I need a method of at least getting the data off of those floppy discs and onto my current Win10 laptop. The discs were formatted and used using Windows 95. It occured to me I would need an external USB 3.5 inch floppy disc reader that could work with systems from Windows 95 up to Windows 10.

I purchased another laptop some years later which probably has a later operating system. Possibly it is Windows 7 or 8. This laptop was retired because I could no longer get it to connect to the internet and believe the drivers or some internal parameter failed. It still works, but I needed a device I could connect to the internet with. An option would be to simply get an external reader that works within the Windows 95 to Windows 7/8, then somehow get the data from laptop #2 to my current Windows 10 laptop.

So, this is the dilemma.

1) Is there an online resource where I could find a replacement battery for the Compaq Presario 1610, allowing me to simply fire this old laptop up and retrieve everything via USB flash drive? I am assuming that once/should/if I manage to secure a new battery and use a flash drive, I will need some method to 'translate' or 'convert' that data from Windows 95 into something readable on a later laptop.

2) Failing to secure a replacement battery and turning to the floppy discs themselves, some research indicates there are external USB 3.5 inch floppy disc readers that do read Windows 95. Can anyone recommend a decent reader that could just let me retrieve the data when plugged into my current Win10 laptop?

3) Is there a method of retrieval I am not aware of? Is this something that a local computer repair shop could do?

4) I also am under the belief that there is a difference in bits, like the older laptop may be 32 bit and the newer ones are 64 bit.

At this point I am at a loss for my next step and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS: I have looked on Newegg and Amazon and I saw lots of readers. I just don't know if I need one that goes all the way back to Windows 95 (which I dearly loved as an operating system-simple as easy to use).

For a Photoshop-type app, I've heard good things about GIMP. Haven't used it myself, as the Adobe Creative Suite is a big part of my job, but it looks pretty robust for a free, open-source app. https://www.gimp.org/
